<\/strong>Laura Burns and\u00a0Jeffery White<br \/><strong>Literature &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong> Elizabeth Harazim and Nan Ma<br \/><strong>Pre-College Programs &#8211; <\/strong>Sean Allen<br \/><strong>Accelerated Program &#8211; <\/strong>David Lopez-Kopp and Donna Miguel<br \/><strong>Composition and Technical Writing &#8211; <\/strong>Natalie Martinez<\/p>\n<h3><em>Heat&#8217;s On!\u00a0 <\/em>Course Outcomes &#8211; <br \/>Working Meeting Friday, June 13th 1:30 &#8211; 3:30<\/h3>\n<p>One of the first tasks the coordinators will be leading us through is the redesign of course outcomes for ALL of our English courses.\u00a0 This work must be done by June 30th, 2014 in order to help the college prepare for our upcoming accreditation visit.\u00a0 (Yes, we, too, are rolling our eyes.\u00a0 Again?\u00a0 Revise them again?!)<\/p>\n<p>We need the expertise of as many English department faculty members as possible at this meeting.\u00a0 We would like to move through\u00a0 all of our outcomes in this single three hour meeting.\u00a0 Adjunct faculty will be paid for attending.<\/p>\n<h3>On Fire!<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Affiliation Re-ignites<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scott and Suzy are happy to announce that eight faculty members have been granted affiliated status for the 2014-2015 school year.\u00a0 Congratulations to <strong>Barbara Butler, Donna Cowan, Karrin Peterson, Debbie Pope, Cassie Cross, Tobi Rosenberg, Paula Sebastian<\/strong>, and <strong>Lynne Walker.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0These annually affiliated faculty will join our life-time affiliated faculty,\u00a0<strong>Nancy Eichner, James Goldsmith, <\/strong>and<strong> Kathleen White<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you have questions about affiliation or are interested in applying for affiliation next year,\u00a0 contact <strong>Suzy Lepeintre or Scott Bessho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dissertation Defended!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyesu Park <\/strong>has successfully <strong>defended her dissertation!<\/strong>\u00a0 Please congratulate Dr. Park when you see her next.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hyesu&#8217;s dissertation is focused on post-1945 Asian American literature.\u00a0 She\u00a0 explores the continued formation of Asian American literature after WWII as well as investigating how it interfaces with American literature.\u00a0 She pays particular attention to how authors choose to reframe historical events\u00a0to\u00a0 create innovative fictions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>100-level Technical Writing Course to Pilot Fall 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Karrin Peterson\u00a0<\/strong>is on track to<strong> pilot a 100-level Technical Writing<\/strong> class this Fall.\u00a0 The course will run as\u00a0 ENGL 194 &#8211; Special Studies in English while she pilots the curriculum.\u00a0 All\u00a0seats for the pilot will be reserved for students in the Autism Spectrum Navigators Program.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Maggie Harada, Michelle Chavez, Susan Roselle<\/strong>, and <strong>Sara Gardner<\/strong> (from the Disability Resource Center)\u00a0are all part of the team Karrin is working with to bring this about.\u00a0\u00a0 We are very grateful to everyone involved for seeking to create this option for students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discipline Specific English 101 Sections to Pilot Fall 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nan Ma, Jim Dicus, Paula Sebastian, and Lynne Walker <\/strong>will launch <strong>discipline specific English 101 sections<\/strong> for Fall 2014!\u00a0 Nan has been working with programs across the campus to develop discipline specific English 101 sections.\u00a0 Faculty in Business have been the first to engage fully with the project and because of that engagement, Nan, Jim, Paula and Lynne are ready to move forward and offer Business content specific English 101 sections this Fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Superstars Seeking New Horizons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tenured English instructor <strong>Roger George <\/strong>and\u00a0reading lab instructor <strong>Belle Geodeke<\/strong> are retiring.\u00a0 It&#8217;s unbelievable.\u00a0 How can we picture the English Department and the Reading Lab without them?\u00a0 They are joining other stellar colleagues like <strong>Pat Andrus, Arline Davis<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Linda Leeds<\/strong>, who officially separated from the college earlier this Spring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WAC Workshops in the Faculty Commons Spring 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nan Ma\u00a0<\/strong>has been working for the Faculty Commons, developing and leading a variety of workshops designed to help faculty across the disciplines teach and assess writing in their classes.\u00a0\u00a0 Nan organized the following workshops this Spring 2014<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Writing Prompt Design with co-presenters\u00a0<strong>Catherine Berkenfield, Donna Cowan,<\/strong> and <strong>Roger George \u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grading Rubric Design and Revision Guidelines with co-presenters\u00a0<strong>Natalie Martinez and Gordon Leighton<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Effective Peer Reviews with co-presenters\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Harazim, David Lopez-Kopp, and Garrett Nichols<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each workshop generated rich and productive conversations about writing and teaching.\u00a0 Instructors from Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, Chemistry and the Writing Lab participated and shared their approaches to teaching and using writing in their classrooms. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>University of New Mexico Mentoring Institute Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Catherine Berkenfield<\/strong> is the outgoing Faculty Lead of the Mentoring Programs in the Faculty Commons.\u00a0 She&#8217;s built an amazing program and now gets to share her insights as a presenter at the October University of New Mexico Mentoring Institute Conference (<a href=\"http:\/\/mentor.unm.edu\/\">http:\/\/mentor.unm.edu\/<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reading Lab Revisioned<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Reading Lab is experimenting with new models for supporting students&#8217;
