Feedback on this is still welcome. We will schedule open meetings throughout the remainder of the quarter to discuss the proposed definitions and articulations of our new ILOs. We will also add preliminary rubrics to the ILO articulation posts over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, here is what our Communications ILO working group has come up with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communication ILO\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>(4-Pager)\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Communication is the ability to clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with diverse audiences in various settings and contexts.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) identifies several competencies that help prepare students for a successful transition into the professional work force.\u202f First on the list of eight durable skills (or \u201ccareer readiness competencies\u201d) is <em>communication<\/em>&#8211; the ability to, \u201cclearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.\u201d<sup>1,2,3<\/sup>\u202f In addition, a recent study by LinkedIn found that \u201cdurable\u201d skills are growing in importance.<sup>4<\/sup>\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant amount of professional work is done in groups or teams where communication skills are needed to effectively collaborate with colleagues.\u202f Communication skills enable individuals to effectively express their thoughts, opinions, and ideas to others as well as actively listen.\u202f Moreover, good communication skills are essential for civic engagement, building trust, and establishing and maintaining professional and interpersonal\u202frelationships, allowing individuals to partake in meaningful dialogue that can lead to positive change.<sup>5<\/sup>\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bellevue College Communication ILO aims to help students effectively communicate with diverse audiences in a variety of contexts such as dialogue, group discussions, and presentations.\u202f To accomplish this, students will develop skills in reading, expressing ideas clearly in writing and speaking\/signing, and active listening\/receptive skills<sup>*<\/sup><sup>6,7<\/sup>, readily preparing them for their life beyond college.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reading\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will read, interpret, and evaluate information effectively across a variety of contexts.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowledge, Skills, &amp; Abilities\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The learner:\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Comprehends and analyzes text for main ideas and supporting details.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Summarizes information accurately.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identifies the author\u2019s purpose, tone, and intended audience.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Analyzes arguments, evidence, and reasoning for credibility, relevance, and bias.\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applies reading strategies to enhance understanding and critical thinking across disciplines (e.g. annotating, note-taking, questioning, summarizing, attention to genre).\u202f\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Uses textual evidence to support conclusions and problem-solving and distinguishes genre.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubric&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ILO:&nbsp; Communication \u2013 Reading Rubric&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Level<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>1 pt- Beginning; Limited observable skill in this area<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>2 pt- Developing<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>3 pt- Proficient; Student ready to graduate with an AA<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>4 pt- Exemplary; Student ready to graduate with BAS or similar<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp;Has difficulty identifying main ideas or understanding basic meaning.
