This was always indented to serve as more than just a single welcome page posted to a website. A goal was to create\u00a0an informative course of material for students entering into HCTM.<\/p>\n<p>After I was hired as the E-Learning Specialist in spring of 2014, we added to what was already built the previous year. By September we had designed\u00a0a robust online orientation including information about student\u00a0learning styles, college culture, research methods, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m proud of the work we accomplished my main point here is to bring attention to the orientation itself as something your program might consider creating. \u00a0Aspects of the orientation that I think\u00a0will prove the most useful are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An excellent library orientation created by Lisa Lapointe, a Baccalaureate Librarian at the college.<\/li>\n<li>Kim Hassell&#8217;s description of \u00a0how much work is in a\u00a0\u00a0college &#8220;credit.&#8221; I doubt\u00a0most students give this much thought, and my guess is that many faculty don&#8217;t realize how much time or homework is recommended for a 5 credit course.<\/li>\n<li>Pam and I utilized the online tool Softchalk Cloud \u00a0to build a medical terminology module. With further planning it may eventually work as a 1 credit course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/commons.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2014\/10\/orientation02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-33\" src=\"\/\/commons.bellevuecollege.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2014\/10\/orientation02-132x300.png\" alt=\"student orientations modules\" width=\"132\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The orientation was released to new HCTM students \u00a0two weeks before the quarter began. They were notified of our\u00a0expectation that they complete by the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> week of the quarter. \u00a0Yes- the orientation was a lot of work, but we see it as an investment. We\u00a0welcomed\u00a0our students to the program while also setting a tone of high expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Your\u00a0\u00a0program\/division could start by developing\u00a0a simple module with a few pages in a Canvas shell.\u00a0Maybe include a self-check quiz to assess students\u2019 understanding.
