It starts by forming a Lean Team of subject matter experts who participate in a &#8220;Lean Event.&#8221; A group of cross-departmental employees comes together for a compressed period of time (usually 4 half-days in a row), to review a specific process in detail and &#8211; most importantly &#8211; from the perspective of those it serves (students, fellow employees or both).<\/p>\n<p>Pain points are quickly identified: things like waiting in line; unused materials or reports; duplication of effort; routing time for simple approvals; numerous redirects (aka &#8220;the BC shuffle&#8221;); inadequate technology; searching for the right person or piece of information; and even physical layouts that may create unintended constraints. Teams identify ways to make the process more efficient and satisfying to everyone involved. A set of recommendations is developed, assigned and implemented over time.<\/p>\n<h2>Pre-Lean Event<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An employee identifies \u201cPain Points\u201d, submits suggestion<\/li>\n<li>Lean Council approves Lean Event<\/li>\n<li>Coach(es) identified<\/li>\n<li>Coaches meet with Sponsors<\/li>\n<li>Event Charter drafted<\/li>\n<li>Lean Team identified<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Lean Event<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Lean Team orientation<\/li>\n<li>Create Current State (Visual State Map)\n<ul>\n<li>Visually define process<\/li>\n<li>Identify Wastes<\/li>\n<li>Gather Baseline Metrics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create Future State Map<\/li>\n<li>Define Action Plan<\/li>\n<li>Present to Sponsors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Post Lean Event<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Coaches meet with Kaizen Team<\/li>\n<li>Kaizen Team implements process change<\/li>\n<li>Train Employees on new process<\/li>\n<li>Gather metrics on process, report change<\/li>\n<li>Monitor for compliance and additional changes<\/li>\n<li>Continue to monitor (weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.bellevuecollege.edu\/lean\/events\/bc\/\">Lean Events @ BC<\/a><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What happens with process improvement ideas that are good candidates for Lean?
