Winter 2020 (Jan 28, 2020)

 Dear BC Community,

Here is an update for winter quarter on progress toward our ATD goals for this academic year. If you recall from Opening Day, the ATD Student Success work is to close equity gaps and improve success for all students.  To review our goals and strategies, please refer to my fall quarterly message which is on the ATD website.

Progress to date:

  • The Integrated Student Supports (ISS) Collective will meet on a quarterly basis to bring campus partners together in the spirit of increasing communication, collaboration and building capacity. They will meet today from 1pm–3pm in N201. All are welcome to attend.
  • BC was awarded a highly competitive Department of Education Title III Strengthening Institutions Grant to focus on Student Success.
  • An intake form to connect students proactively to services has been completed by over 100 students for winter 2020 and will continue scale up.
  • The BC Pathways workgroup finalized the BC Pathways. Faculty are creating discipline-specific course maps which are due in February.  Here is a short video from the SBCTC for more information about Pathways.
  • The First Year Seminar (FYS) is a student success course designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to achieve their long-term goals.  The course curriculum proposal was submitted to the Curriculum Advisory Committee.  The faculty training is being developed and the application process will be released by the end of the winter quarter.
  • The Faculty Professional Development (FPD) Workgroup is investigating high impact practices through the Faculty Commons “High 5 Next Steps” Learning Community this year. If you are a faculty member who has taken High 5 and would like to participate in the faculty research project, contact the Faculty Commons.
  •  TargetX (BC’s customer relationship management system) implementation Phase One was completed in fall quarter and is on target for an all campus rollout in fall 2020.
  • ATD is working with the Council for Inclusion and Diversity to improve the communication of disaggregated student success data by race and ethnicity categories.
  • In December, ATD held a retreat to clarify how and when BC will ensure every student receives the supports they need to succeed. We used the Bulldog Trail created by Dr. B (AVP of Student Affairs) to determine at what point in a student’s life cycle they obtain various supports and interventions: advising, orientation, first-year seminar, etc.

How to get informed or involved:

  • ISS Collective will be held today from 1pm–3pm in N201. We invite the campus community to hear more about the work of ATD and the Integrated Student Supports group.
  • We will continue with the ATD theme at the winter and spring All Faculty Meeting, addressing some of these topics there.
  • ATD Core Team meetings are open to the public and generally occur on the 2nd Monday of each month from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the East Boardroom, B-201B.
  • We will hold an ATD Office Hour at the Faculty Commons in D104 on Monday, February 3 from 2pm-3pm. Please drop-in and learn more about our work and ask questions.
  • BC Pathways Team is currently working with transfer program areas to review courses and build course maps in each focus area.  Please contact your chair if you would like to participate and gain access to the Canvas site with resources.

Achieving our goal requires collaboration grounded in communication, gathering input from stakeholders, and making decisions based on data and feedback. I am inspired by and deeply appreciative of the large number of faculty and staff engaged in ATD Student Success work, listed here.

For this effort to be successful, everyone needs to play a part. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our ATD Co-Leads, Bonnie Berry and Jennie Mayer.

Thank you for your commitment to BC and our students.

Fall 2019 (Sep 30, 2019)

Dear BC Community,

Last spring I began sending out Quarterly Achieving the Dream (ATD) updates; here is an update for fall quarter including our progress to date and our action plan for this coming academic year.

Student Success was the theme for Opening Day. In 2017, BC adopted the ATD framework which values equity, data-informed decision making, and a student-centered approach. ATD has helped unify BC stakeholders across campus and those involved in the ATD work have told me they are excited at the goals and progress we’ve made in the last couple of years.

Completion data for 2010-2016 showed that more than 40% of our students have no credential and are not enrolled in any higher education institution six years after entering BC. When that data is disaggregated by race, only 32% of African American students and 40% of Latinx students graduate or transfer from BC in three years.

Our focus is to close equity gaps and improve success for all students.

To achieve our goal, the faculty and staff engaged in ATD have determined that BC must ensure every student will:

  • Develop an education plan
  • Participate in advising
  • Choose a Pathway in their 2nd quarter at BC
  • Engage with support services to assess their progress regularly
  • Complete college level English and Math in their first year
  • Be taught by faculty who engage students using evidence-based practices

Progress to date includes:

·        Education plan tracking, with 10,000 education plans recorded (many thanks to Teresa Descher for leading this effort)

·        AVP of Student Affairs, Dr. Brenda Ivelisse, created the Bulldog Student Success Trail, which is a model that guides students from their connection to BC (Explore) through their ultimate success post-BC (Thrive):

  • An intake form was developed to connect students more proactively to services
  • Identification of major career Pathways, so students can choose a career path and follow it through their time at BC. Data show students with a clear path are more likely to succeed
  • This year we plan to continue work on:
  • Pathways course mapping so students know which courses will help them achieve the skills, knowledge, and abilities for their career of interest
  • The First Year Seminar (FYS) which gives students career exploration curricula
  • Faculty will be encouraged to use and track the effect of student engagement with the Faculty Commons High 5 strategies
  • Target X implementation will help staff connect with students more proactively to increase their success
  • Develop a unifying institutional structure and culture that supports faculty through professional development
  • Faculty will be encouraged to build upon the High 5 teaching practices as proven strategies for student success and engagement
  • A systematic professional development tracking system will be established to track the wide variety of PD opportunities faculty are encouraged to participate in that create equity and build community

There will be opportunities for faculty and staff to learn how to access and use data collected by the college in a series of Data Workshops this quarter, facilitated by Zorica Wacker, IBIT faculty:

(Please note some of these dates/locations have been changed since the Opening Day presentation)

  • Cycle 1 Part 1 Tue Oct 01 2019 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, A-134  (Starts tomorrow!)
  • Cycle 1 Part 2 Thursday October 10 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, N-209
  • Cycle 2 Part 1 Thursday October 24 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, N-209
  • Cycle Part 2 Thursday October 31 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, N-209

You will find PowerPoints and flyers about ATD work in the ATD SharePoint Site.

We’d also like to announce that all future ATD Core Team meetings will be open to the public and generally occur on the 2nd Monday of each month from 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the East Boardroom. We are also hosting an ATD Town Hall on Tuesday, November 19, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in D-106 which will be an open forum where the BC Campus Community may learn more about our work and ask questions.

Achieving our goal requires collaboration grounded in communication, gathering input from stakeholders, and making decisions based on data and feedback. I am inspired by and deeply appreciative of the large number of faculty and staff engaged in ATD.

We’ve had some leadership changes since last year. We’d like to acknowledge and thank our previous and current workgroup leads:

Faculty Professional Development: Tonya Estes and Maurya Radvilas (previously Eric Nacke and Andria Villines)
Integrated Advising and Student Supports: Melissa Martinez (previously Rae Ellen Reas and Gilbert Villalpondo)
BC Pathways: Allison Kang, Margaret Harada, and Christina Sciabarra (Christina is joining as First Year Seminar lead)

I’d like to thank those who serve on the ATD Core Team, Data Team, and the Communications/Marketing Team.  The many faculty and staff serving on the three workgroups (listed above) also deserve appreciation.

For this effort to be successful, everyone needs to play a part. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our ATD Co-Leads, Bonnie Berry and Jennie Mayer

Thank you for your commitment to BC and our students.
