Zeitgeist

ZeitgeistEach historical moment has its own Zeitgeist, or spirit of age.  This section of Integrated Studies examines three examples:

  • the age of modernism at the turn of the century
  • countercultures during the 1960s
  • consumerism in the 21st century

Through reading and seminar discussion, we will consider the relationship between historical context and cultural production.  Are we slaves to our own time, or can we transcend our own age to make truly innovative things?  To understand the meaning of Zeitgeist, we will read the works of feminism and the futurists, William Ginsburg and Timothy Leary, Hip-Hop and artifacts of our new virtual reality.
