Logo3b The Student Government has opened a food pantry containing non-perishable food, easy-to-fix meals, and hygiene products. A student needing lunch can get something at the pantry, located outside the ASG Offices above the cafeteria, take the food downstairs to the microwaves, and prepare it there. We have needed this for a long time, and it’s great to see. Please pass the word along to your students. (submitted by Gordon Leighton)

♦ Access to LMC Kiosk for A&H Programssubmitted by Mark Storey
BC’s Library Media Center has been experimenting this quarter with handing over their window-front kiosk and front-lobby flat screen monitor for use by academic departments.
They have two-week slots open next year for departments wishing to take them over to highlight specific issues, or simply to show the BC community what their program is doing.
The world-renown BC Philosophy Department has stepped up to showcase “Philosophically-Minded Activists.” We have an interactive (quiz-style) PowerPoint presentation looping on the flat screen, related books and DVDs on display at the kiosk, and flyers available touting some of our department’s Winter 2015 courses. Stop by the LMC and take a look at what Philosophy has done with their presentation, and get some ideas for your department. Contact the LMC for additional information, or me (Mark Storey) if you want to hear from a faculty member how easy it is to work with our LMC peers on this. mark.storey@bellevuecollege.edu or 425-564-2118…read more

Reading Apprenticeship 5-Week Online Course – It is Well Worth Your Time! Submitted by Jen Anderson    All of us, as instructors, require reading in our classes – from textbooks, to assignments, to websites and items posted on Canvas. Yet how many of us know anything about how our students’ reading history has impacted them as readers? How many of us know and use strategies to promote greater depth of understanding of the texts we are requiring our students to read? If you are interested in making reading a more student-centered and meaningful part of your course, the Reading Apprenticeship Program is for you!

The Reading Apprenticeship Program, developed by West Ed, is a 5-week online course that requires 2-3 hours/week. You get to play the part of the student while learning and using a variety of strategies to make reading easier and more meaningful for your students.

For more information, please visit www.readingapprenticeship.org or contact the Reading Lab chair, Megan Hansen at megan.hansen@bellevuecollege.edu.
This program is time well spent in making developing strategies to make reading more relatable and accessible for your students. Engaged and persistent readers develop confidence and competence in the classroom.
